In May 2016, Nelson Civic Theatre Society convened a meeting of local screen-based industry professionals to gain a better understanding of what the needs were and how we could support this sector. At this meeting, we learned that there is an appetite for connection opportunities within the local screen-based industry (inclusive of tv, film, video, and online screens)and for the creation of a place for cross-pollination of ideas where professionals can learn about available resources that can be shared. The group suggested many options for training, events, and amenities that could be developed to support a more robust screen-based industry in our area. Since that time, we have been able to expand our role in the local screen-based industry (SBI), through ongoing monthly meetups for SBI workers, a Kootenay-wide Facebook group of more than 400 members, and several Kootenay film events at The Civic Theatre and in communities throughout the Kootenays.

Concurrently Kootenay Rockies Tourism (KRT)has continued their longstanding work to represents over 700 tourism businesses and operators throughout Southeastern BC, working closely with Destination British Columbia on the delivery of two programs: Remarkable Experiences and Destination Development.

Creative BC brings a strategic and integrated approach to the growth and development of the province's creative industries, providing professional expertise and business support to strengthen BC's motion picture, interactive and digital media, music and sound recording, and book and magazine publishing industries. Their programs, services and investments act as catalysts to help the sector realize its economic and creative potential, contributing to the future prosperity of our province. Established by the provincial government, Creative BC collaborates with many provincial ministries and initiatives, municipal resources and relevant industry associations and committees to grow our sector. Their role in facilitating the Kootenay Film Commissioner role is one such collaboration.

2021 is a transition year for regional film office services for the Kootenay region with the regional film liaison retiring from the position. The collaboration between NCTS and KRT serves to further develop the Kootenay Screen-Based Industry (KSBI), while increasing regional capacity to provide film commission services and market the region to outside production crews.
