The Civic Theatre Breaks Ground on Long-Awaited Renewal

Nelson, BC – The Nelson Civic Theatre Society (NCTS) marked a major milestone in the future of The Civic Theatre with a public groundbreaking ceremony on April 29, 2026.

This moment signaled the transition from planning to construction in the long-anticipated redevelopment of Nelson’s historic theatre into a fully accessible, three-screen community cultural hub.

Following years of planning, advocacy, and community support, the project is now moving into its next phase, bringing the vision of a revitalized Civic Theatre closer to reality.

“This is a turning point for The Civic,” said Eleanor Stacey, Executive Director of NCTS. “We have been working toward this moment for more than a decade, and it reflects the dedication and tenacity of many people who have carried this vision forward. Breaking ground shows that this project is no longer just a plan - it’s underway. This is a project built by a community, and built for a community, and we now have a clear path toward reopening this theatre for everyone.”

The renewed Civic Theatre will:

This phase of the project has been made possible through contributions from the federal and provincial governments, alongside support from Columbia Basin Trust, the City of Nelson, and strong community fundraising efforts.

“Breaking ground on the redevelopment of the Civic Theatre brings us one step closer to a more modern, accessible cultural hub for the City of Nelson,” said the Honourable Stephen Fuhr, Member of Parliament for Kelowna, and Secretary of State for Defence Procurement. “Projects like this show what’s possible when partners come together to invest in local arts and culture. It’s about preserving what makes communities unique while building vibrant spaces for people to connect and create.”

“People across Nelson will benefit from an inclusive cultural space that strengthens community

connection, access to arts, and quality of life for everyone,” said Christine Boyle, Minister of

Housing and Municipal Affairs. “This groundbreaking brings the long-awaited restoration of The Civic Theatre one big step closer, showing what’s possible when all levels of government work together toward a shared vision.”

“I am thrilled to see the Nelson Civic Theatre Project moving forward with significant contributions from the province,” said Brittny Anderson, MLA for Nelson-Creston. “I celebrate the efforts of the entire team who have been working diligently to ensure this space will be a modernized and accessible gathering place for the community.”

“The Civic Theatre is an important part of Nelson’s cultural identity,” said Mayor of Nelson Janice Morrison. “This project both preserves its history and supports its future, and the City is pleased to support the renewal of this community space and to see the project move into construction.”

“For generations, The Civic Theatre has been a place for cultural expression and shared experiences,” said Johnny Strilaeff, President and CEO of Columbia Basin Trust. “We’re proud to support community-led projects like this, where local leadership is renewing important spaces, improving access and creating opportunities for people to connect through arts and culture for years to come.”

The April 29 event included a brief outdoor groundbreaking ceremony at The Civic Theatre, followed by a community open house at the Adventure Hotel. The event brought together project partners, supporters, and community members to mark this important milestone and share what comes next.

“This project has always been about more than a building,” added Stacey. “Over the past two years, we’ve all felt what it means not to have this space, and that absence has only made it clearer how much it matters. What we’re building is a place where people can come together - to sit side by side, lights down, screen lit up, sharing stories and experiences - ensuring The Civic continues to serve this community for generations to come.”

Project Funding Support Includes:

Construction is now beginning, with reopening planned following completion of the current renovation phase. Fundraising efforts will also continue as the project moves forward.
