It's been a strange year, to say the least, and we're all still grappling with the social and economic impacts and challenges that have taken this year by storm. Thank you for helping us keep our doors open, allowing us to keep bringing entertainment into our community and our staff employed.
We are taking regional, provincial, and federal government health orders seriously. Our theatre is still screening films at a reduced 50-person capacity, but this measure has deeply impacted our financial stability this year. We are so grateful for your generosity, as we need your support more than ever.
Help us achieve 25% of this goal today - $5,000 on Giving Tuesday. Making a generous gift to The Civic today ensures a great 2021 full of film screenings, drive-in movies, artist residencies, free community events, economic development for the local film sector, and more.
Click the button below to choose your gift option. Even a small donation will go a long way. Thank you for your support, your kind gift will help us with our operational solvency.
If you prefer to make your donation offline, please send a cheque made out to the Nelson Civic Theatre Society directly to the theatre. Alternatively, you can get in touch with Jess Phillips (Manager, Individual Giving & Special Events) to arrange planned giving, donations of securities and other ways to individually support our theatre. Thank you for your support!
All donors making gifts of $20* or more will receive a charitable receipt.
Because sometimes the most ridiculous questions deserve honest answers.
1. Will there still be popcorn?
Yes. Popcorn is forever. So are napkins you forget to grab until halfway through the movie.
2. Is the new elevator haunted?
Only by the ghosts of people who used to trip on the stairs in the dark.
3. Are you building a secret tunnel to the Capitol Theatre?
We’re not, but now we’re picturing a rivalry musical called West Kootenay Side Story.
4. Will I still be able to sneak in snacks?
You can try but karma is cruel.
5. Will there be a baby change table?
Yes! Also known as "a real theatre where parents are welcome and supported."
6. Is it true the third theatre is just for karaoke and cat videos?
That’s classified. But bring your high notes and your cat memes just in case.
7. Are you installing reclining seats with foot massages?
No, but we are installing seating you can actually get out of without apologizing to the whole row.
8. Will the washrooms finally not be gross?Yes. AND accessible. AND easier to find. It’s the small joys that matter.
9. Will the concession accept hugs as payment?
Umm, no. But if you’re kind to our staff and recycle your cup, we might give you some extra Civic Spice.
10. Can I rent the space for a private screening of my dog’s birthday party slideshow?
Honestly? Yes. And we hope your dog likes indie soundtracks.
11. Will there be more Barbie photo ops?
Let’s just say we’re keeping the pink paint handy.
12. Can I buy a naming right for the popcorn machine?
If the price is right, absolutely. “The Kernel Kiosk, generously supported by Aunt Doreen.”
13. Is the third screen for underground film or actual underground films?
It’s above ground, but we’re into both meanings. Let’s talk.
14. Will the Shoebox Theatre be jealous when The Civic reopens?
No. It’s thrilled. The last year and half has been a LOT for the actual smallest commercial cinema in the world (prove us wrong on that fact).
15. Will there be space to cry about emotional documentaries in private?
Not really, but we'll at least have tissues. And probably a cup of local tea.
16. Will there be a sign that says, “Don’t mix recycling and emotions”?
You know we’re printing that on a poster.
17. Will you be selling those fancy chocolates again?
Yes. And the olive oil and real butter for popcorn is here to stay. Sorry-not-sorry, buttery topping.
18. Will there be themed nights where we all dress up like Wes Anderson characters?Only if you promise to commit fully to symmetrical angst.
19. Will people still clap at the end of movies?
Only always. And now the acoustics will actually let you hear it.
20. Is there a future where we can have a Film Fest, Drag Brunch, and Climate Panel in one weekend?
That is the future.
