A residency for the question, not the product—where rural roots, bold ideas, and shared inquiry shape the art.
Fostering Creativity, Connection, and Cultural Inquiry in the Kootenays
At the heart of our mission to uplift stories and strengthen community through the arts, since 2020 NCTS has proudly offers an Artist Residency Program tailored to support creators living and working in rural British Columbia. With a focus on process over product, our residency provides time, space, and a supportive cohort for self-directed artistic exploration.
This residency is designed for both emerging and established artists who wish to deepen their practice, explore a question central to their creative or cultural inquiry, and engage meaningfully with peers and community. We welcome artists working in a variety of media, particularly those whose work aligns with our organizational commitments to equity, inclusion, and regional cultural development.
Residency Features:
As a cornerstone of our broader programming—which includes film festivals, youth media education, and industry development—the Artist Residency Program is one way NCTS continues to build a resilient, inclusive cultural ecosystem in the Kootenays.

“I wanted to explore confidence as an artist—how do we validate our own ideas? The residency gave me space to create ‘Are You Listening?’ and ‘Echoes in the Staircase,’ pieces that came from deep listening and personal exploration.” Zaynab Mohammed
“The residency provided space to explore something very personal and very social: what it means to be Black and rural in Canada. The peer model created accountability and support, and that was transformative. My project evolved into a national dialogue through The Black and Rural Project.” Shayna Jones
“The intentionality of the cohort model made this more than just an individual residency—it was cultural infrastructure. The relationships and reflection it facilitated made a lasting impact on both my process and my sense of place as an artist.” Sarah Kapoor
