As we leave Gotham following this week’s on-release opening of ‘The Batman’, and before we jump into a string of sweet on-release weeks of blockbusters (‘Morbius’ - Apr. 1, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ - Apr. 8, and ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ - Apr. 15), The Civic Theatre is loading you up with 2-weeks of the Wheaties of the cinematic world as lead-up to the 2022 Oscars, live stream on Mar. 27th.
To compliment your knowledge of the ‘Best Picture’ category from The Civic’s presentation of them over the past months and your Netflix account, we are excited to provide a slate of ‘Best International Film’, ‘Best Doc’, and ‘Best Doc, Live Action and Animation Shorts’ nominees, so you can select your pics for the Oscar ballot with confidence.
Titles include: ‘Flee’ (Best Doc, Best Animated, Best International nominee), ‘The Worst Person in the World’ (Best International nominee), ‘Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom’ (Best International nominee), ‘Encanto’ (Best Animated Feature nominee), ‘Oscar Shorts (Docs)’, ‘Oscar Shorts (Live Action)’, ‘Oscar Shorts (Animated)’, ‘Writing With Fire’ (Best Doc nominee) and as a bonus, Finland’s entry for the Oscars and Cannes Grand Prix winner, ‘Compartment No. 6’.
All these titles can be purchased separately or you can choose to purchase an Oscar Run Nominee Festival Pass and come to as many of these screenings as you choose for only $45 - 9 films for less than the cost of 4 screenings.
Aside from the Oscar nom slate, we also will be screening another special South Asian Movie Club presentation, ‘Aaja Mexico Challiye’ and two new Canadian film releases. From Quebec, AFKO co-presents ‘Une Révision’ as part of the Rendez-Vous du Cinéma Francophone, and from Nova Scotia, ‘Dawn, Her Dad and the Tractor’, about a trans woman who returns to her family farm after the death of her mother where she sees her father and sister for the first time since her transition. \
Watch the trailers below to learn more about each title, and then get out your bowl, spoon and milk (or oat milk if you're dairy intolerant) and dig in.
