1009 Members, Theatre photos, and a note from Josh

We are extremely proud to announce that with all of your help, we surpassed the 1000 member mark! This past Saturday our famous usher Josh celebrated with some new members and our friends at Save-On-Foods.  Ever the gracious hosts, Save-On-Foods shared cake and balloons, Josh and his photo had their photo taken, and memberships kept coming in!

A million thanks to Murray Kimber and Speedpro Signs for the full-sized cut-out of Josh. Word has it that the eyes follow you as you walk by. How did Speedpro do it?

We also heard that some people haven’t been in the theatre since it closed. Well, we’re pleased to share some photos courtesy of our friend Michael, down at Vogue Studio on Baker Street. As you can see, the renovations will be no small task, but then, all beautiful art starts with a blank canvas.

You may not recognize the theatre you remember, but you can still smell the popcorn, and that can only be a good sign.

A Note from the Membership Committee

by Josh Wapp

This weekend we reached ONE THOUSAND MEMBERS! Wow – amazing! This town really wants their theatre back.

I often hear: “How many members do you need?” We don’t have a fixed number. The City of Nelson requested that we raise some initial funds by Oct 15. The more dollars we raise, the more dollars we are eligible for from granting organizations. So of course, the more members, the better.

But it’s not just about funds: it’s about showing support. The estimated volunteer hours on the part of the membership committee are just over 500! And the theatre society is honoured to have your membership “vote” behind all our hard work.

Recently, our committee chair and computer wizard, Ken Spencer, compiled a database and found that 92% of our members live within 20kms of Nelson. We’d like to see some of our rural neighbours join up as well. If every member forwarded this e-message to just two contacts, we could reach an additional 2,000 possible supporters.

Membership forms can be filled out inside Save-On Foods in Nelson. Even if there are no volunteers at the table, you can pick up a form and bring it to the customer service desk. If you buy a membership before October 13th you will be eligible to win a $500 gift certificate to Save-On Foods!

Thanks again for your support. And, yes, I am the man who wears an usher costume.

Throughout this project, helping at the membership table has been an amazing experience. The many thanks, creative ideas, feedback & advice we receive from all of you we meet continues to encourage us. We couldn’t do this project without you. I mean, really, who’d buy the popcorn?

WOW! We hit 1,000 members!

A huge thanks to Josh and the gang for their hard work, and to Ron World and Save-on Foods for being there for the final push—and then some! On Saturday, September 29 member numbers exceeded 1,000 to reach 1,008 by the end of the day. Save-on produced a cake to celebrate, and surprised Save-on customers were treated to slices handed out by our iconic usher, shown here with his less animated alter-ego. We’re thrilled. And it’s not over!  Join the Nelson Civic Theatre Society, and tell your friends.
