Upcoming Open House and Movie Night

There’s been a lot of moving and shaking going on, and it’s not just the first of the chairs being installed in the concrete floor (although we did feel the Earth move when the very first one went in). Read on to find out about our Open House, our first Film Night, two job opportunities, and more.
The deadline is looming for applications for two project management positions for the exciting project of renovating and reopening our theatre—the start of something big. Got administration, fundraising, and/or management skills? Go to http://www.civictheatre.ca/employment/ and submit your resume and cover letter by Monday, January 21 at 5pm.

Open House! We’re throwing the doors open to the Civic-curious on Sunday, January 27 from 3pm to 6pm. If you haven’t been in the theatre since the last time the projector rolled, you’ll want to see the space now. Come and see how far we’ve come, where we’ve yet to go, and where you can help. There will be a couple of short presentations during the afternoon, opportunities for Q & A, tours of course, and what would a theatre be without popcorn?
We’ll also be launching our Seat Sale (come fly with us!) Sponsor a seat for $250, and you may even get to install it yourself. Because this is The Theatre Nelson Built, it seems right to put the tools in your hands. Not handy with a wrench? No worries; our Chair Elves will do the job.

Our first Film Night is coming up February 23, but shhhhh! The movie selection is still a secret. We’ll have special pricing for members and opportunities to join. We’ll have lights, projector, action–and we’ll have seats! (Especially if you sponsor one).

Filmlovers, of course, have been making things happen while the Civic’s been dark, and the Capitol Theatre is the host of three upcoming opportunities. So while you’re waiting, check out the Amnesty International Film Festival on Saturday, January 21, FLIKS Canadian Film Festival February 8 – 9, as well as the Mamma Mia sing-along on Saturday, February 16. Information can be found at www.capitoltheatre.bc.ca for Capitol events, and the full FLIKS schedule is at www.fliks.ca.Thank-yous are in order to Jay and his sailing cohorts J.P., Jim, Glenn, and Gregor for giving up an evening to sand the auditorium floor. Thanks to Brian and Penny for devoting a morning to washing the floors. A big thank you to Jared of J. Brand Painting for offering to lead the painting crew next week. Thanks to Home Hardware Nelson Building Centre and to Nelson Farmers’ Supply for donating the paint. Finally, thanks to the Lion’s Club for a generous donation of $1,000.

Any volunteers who want to help paint (or to offer volunteer services for anything) please get in touch with Anna at anna@civictheatre.ca or click here

1009 Members, Theatre photos, and a note from Josh

We are extremely proud to announce that with all of your help, we surpassed the 1000 member mark! This past Saturday our famous usher Josh celebrated with some new members and our friends at Save-On-Foods.  Ever the gracious hosts, Save-On-Foods shared cake and balloons, Josh and his photo had their photo taken, and memberships kept coming in!

A million thanks to Murray Kimber and Speedpro Signs for the full-sized cut-out of Josh. Word has it that the eyes follow you as you walk by. How did Speedpro do it?

We also heard that some people haven’t been in the theatre since it closed. Well, we’re pleased to share some photos courtesy of our friend Michael, down at Vogue Studio on Baker Street. As you can see, the renovations will be no small task, but then, all beautiful art starts with a blank canvas.

You may not recognize the theatre you remember, but you can still smell the popcorn, and that can only be a good sign.

A Note from the Membership Committee

by Josh Wapp

This weekend we reached ONE THOUSAND MEMBERS! Wow – amazing! This town really wants their theatre back.

I often hear: “How many members do you need?” We don’t have a fixed number. The City of Nelson requested that we raise some initial funds by Oct 15. The more dollars we raise, the more dollars we are eligible for from granting organizations. So of course, the more members, the better.

But it’s not just about funds: it’s about showing support. The estimated volunteer hours on the part of the membership committee are just over 500! And the theatre society is honoured to have your membership “vote” behind all our hard work.

Recently, our committee chair and computer wizard, Ken Spencer, compiled a database and found that 92% of our members live within 20kms of Nelson. We’d like to see some of our rural neighbours join up as well. If every member forwarded this e-message to just two contacts, we could reach an additional 2,000 possible supporters.

Membership forms can be filled out inside Save-On Foods in Nelson. Even if there are no volunteers at the table, you can pick up a form and bring it to the customer service desk. If you buy a membership before October 13th you will be eligible to win a $500 gift certificate to Save-On Foods!

Thanks again for your support. And, yes, I am the man who wears an usher costume.

Josh Wapp

Throughout this project, helping at the membership table has been an amazing experience. The many thanks, creative ideas, feedback & advice we receive from all of you we meet continues to encourage us. We couldn’t do this project without you. I mean, really, who’d buy the popcorn?

517 Members!

Wow! We are very pleased to announce we’ve passed our original membership expectation of 500 members.

After a whopping 87 memberships sold at Marketfest on Friday, 517 people have stepped forward with their support for our project and purchased memberships to our society.

Our membership drive shows community support for our project and we are very grateful for the vote of confidence you have all provided.

However our work is far from over.  We will continue selling memberships as we move towards our October 15th deadline, and are still looking for volunteers for a number of opportunities.

Thanks again, and lets aim for 600… 750… 1000 new members!

The July Newsletter

Hello!

Welcome to the first Nelson Civic Theatre Society Newsletter!

Thanks for signing up for the NCTS newsletter – and thanks for your patience – we’ve been so busy this is our first one!

As this is the first newsletter we’ll try to keep it short, but we do have lots to tell you so please visit our website at www.civictheatre.ca for all our updates.

Q & A – We all love the movies so its no surprise that lots of people have lots of questions! Check out our Questions & Answers for the answers to some of the most common questions we’ve been asked. Didn’t find what you were looking for? Drop us a line and we’ll be happy to answer it!

Memberships – We are very excited to have started our Membership Drive. As a member you’ll really love the benefits once we open but in the mean time your membership demonstrates support to the City and brings our non-profit society the first round of financing to begin our work – we are all volunteers but unfortunately almost everything else costs money! Please join today!

Volunteers – Now that the ball is rolling everyone wants our theatre to re-open as quickly as possible, and the more hands-on help we can find the quicker we can get there! Many of you have expressed interest and the more you get involved the more fun you will have! We would love your help with:

  • Our membership drive: Help us attract new members! If you believe in this project you are already qualified!
  • Our publicity campaign: This is Nelson! Home to filmmakers, artists, writers, speakers and people-who-know-everybody! Help us share our vision and spread the word! Online, On-print and On-the-streets!
  • Fundraising: The building is over 75 years old, and by the looks of things so is the projector! We love the old charm, but not the old carpets. Help us raise the money needed to turn our theatre back to its glory and forward to its potential. Sure, we’ll sell seats but we’ll also go high-tech with an international crowd-sourcing project and social media campaign… there are 2.2 billion people online who might be movie-watching tourists!
  • Our feasibility study: We need people to help us nail down the financials and so we need folks with knowledge of theatres, old buildings, design, and of course our community. We know our plan is sound, now we need to prove it.
  • Our website: It’s pretty basic isn’t it? Come on, this is the movie industry! We need some action! If you’re a graphic designer, WordPress developer or social marketing guru we need your help! One day people will want to buy tickets online and you might be the person to make that happen!
  • …anything else?! Sign up to volunteer at volunteer@civictheatre.ca. Tell us a bit about yourself, and where you think you’d best fit in. Be a part of this amazing project and maybe one day you’ll see your name in lights!

Over the past few years everything has changed in the movie business – digital downloads have had a remarkably positive effect on theatres, especially in small towns! In future newsletters we hope to spark your imagination, and we hope you will ignite it in others, as we explore the possibilities of our historic (new?) theatre and offer updates, profiles, and insights into the movie theatre industry.

Thank you for your support and time and we look forward to seeing you at the movies.

Sincerely,

The Nelson Civic Theatre Society.
