Beautiful films coming in April

Still image from Hayao Miyazaki's "Ponyo"

From The New York International Children’s Film Festival come two beautiful films for kids just in time for Earth Day. The Civic’s April Film Weekend is April 18 – 20.

Frequently referred to as the Disney of Japan, the films of Studio Ghibli are known for startlingly original animation that combines dazzling visual virtuosity, vivid characterizations, and epic storytelling. These warm, intelligent, poetic films  borrow from fairytale, folklore, and science fiction, grounded in a deeply-felt humanism that embraces family, community  and in a deep concern for the environment and our relationship with nature.

We’re thrilled to be screening new 35mm prints of two beautiful films by Studio Ghibli director Hayao Miyazaki, Castle in the Sky and Ponyo.

Castle in the Sky is “As exhilarating an eco-fantasy as you’re likely to see” (Time Out).  Sheeta, a young girl with a mysterious crystal pendant, falls out of the sky and into the arms and life of Pazu, a young mining engineer. Together they search for legendary Laputa, a floating island in the sky and site of a long-dead civilization promising enormous wealth and power to those who can unlock its secrets.

Ponyo, Miyazaki’s strange and beguiling fantasy film about a sea spirit is an unforgettable eco fable about the terrible power of the sea, but illustrated with such beauty and imagination it transports us entirely into another world. Rated G, this is suitable for children of all ages.

We’re working on some films for adults, too, for our April movie weekend–watch for details.

BE SURE TO CATCH THE DECONSTRUCTING DINNER FESTIVAL APRIL 4 – 6! See our “events and showings” link for more.

Wow–what a weekend!

The Gala was a resounding success, and the Civic Theatre packed ‘em in all weekend long for Skyfall. You came, you saw, and you celebrated.

On Friday night we had great media presence (see Star story below, with thanks to Sam Van Schie), and yes, we even had paparazzi thanks to Robyn Sheppard’s LVR oh-so-enthusiastic drama students. Inviting 250 people into the Civic Theatre lobby was a bit like cramming people into a Volkswagen Beetle, but a whole lot more fun. Thanks to everyone who came out, sponsored seats, made donations, or just had a good time and cheered us on.

Now, the fun really begins with a Community Challenge! Read all about in in the Nelson Star, below:

Nelson’s Civic Theatre Society halfway to first fundraising goal

By Sam Van Schie

A generous donation from an anonymous community member has pushed the Nelson Civic Theatre Society past the halfway point on its fundraising effort towards digitization of the theatre.

The donor paid $60,000 to buy the theatre’s first digital projector. Add that to amount raised by early membership sales, seat sponsorships and other donations, and the society is now about  $75,000 away from the first phase of its plan, with a price tag of $150,000 for purchase and installation of the projector and digital surround sound system.
